Egg Curry

Egg Curry

Last week when I posted my Spinach and Potato Curry, I didn't realise it was going to be so popular! It wasn't even a scheduled post; just one at the last minute that I decided to photograph and post because it was so good. I'm happy to say that quite a few people enjoyed it. I try and study my stats on a regular basis to see what brings readers or Googlers to my site. I look to see what they are searching, what brings them to my site and whether I have something for them. It's also interesting to see what works on Foodgawker; is it just pretty photos or is the food? Interestingly, the Spinach and Potato Curry did very well on Foodgawker even though the photo wasn't a good one at all. So, I guess Foodgawker isn't all about pretty photos; it is a useful resource for finding great recipes. I do get quite a few searches for curries, and even though we eat Indian food at least twice a week, I never think about posting them. To me, it's regular home food, dishes I know without a recipe that I've been making for years. Some are family recipes and some are ones that I improvise on the spot with what I have that day. Somehow, they just don't seem exciting enough to post but ... continue reading...

Chap Chae Noodles

Chap Chae Noodles

Until just recently, I struggled big time with Chinese, Japanese, Korean and any other cuisine requiring stir frying of foods. I could whip up intricate French pastries and make a complicated Indian curry, but ask me to throw a few vegetables into a pan with some sauce without overcooking and over dousing, yeah, it was a Herculean task for me. There was always something off; if the sauce was great then the vegetables were soggy, if the vegetables were great then the meat was colourless and rubbery. It was frustrating. For the longest time, I wanted to believe that it was the equipment I was working with and not me! It is a known fact that for a successful stir fry, one must have high heat to quickly sear meat and crisp cook the vegetables. It's also known quite well, that domestic kitchen stoves do not have the power to attain the heat that is required. Also, if you use a wok, they cannot heat the wok evenly because of the dome bottom (you actually do learn something from watching Cooks Illustrated) I bought carbon steel woks and lovingly, took hours seasoning them and then, I bought large expensive fry pans when I was told they would suit the kitchen stove better. The stir ... continue reading...

Spinach and Potato Curry | Palak Aloo

Spinach and Potato Curry | Palak Aloo

I decided it was finally time to post a somewhat healthy recipe now that we're in the second week of the new year. Greens are always healthy, and we're told at every turn that we need to eat more of them. I like green leafy vegetables, but I cannot seem to eat them all the time and my biggest challenge is trying to fix them in different ways. There has got to be more ways than just sautéed greens with garlic. We eat a lot kale and usually, I like to bake kale chips first and then use them crumbled on top of soups and stews. I find baked kale chips texture more appealing than straight up stewed or sautéed kale. I like the chard too but can never get creative with them. I've curried them before and added them to stews but I'm never inspired. It's a bit sad really because I see mountains of them in the farmers markets during spring and even the shops have decent bundles. The fresh, young spring greens are easy, because to preserve the flavour of the young tender leaves, we eat them in spring mix salads or toss them gently and stir fry. But then I lose interest. Every year, I promise I'm going to get inspired! I probably use spinach the most as far as greens go. It's easy to have ... continue reading...

Curried Chicken Noodle Soup

Curried Chicken Noodle Soup

Yes, it is yet another soup recipe. I know that lately, with all these sub zero temperatures we're having across the nation, there have been 101 soup posts. Well, I figured we needed a 102nd one because you need a different soup for each of the days :) I've enjoyed reading everyone's soup posts and it's great to have so many choices when I'm ready to make soup again. A particular favourite I'm eyeing is Kitchen Riffs wonderful Harira. Actually, I really had no intention of sharing this recipe and I just made it for our dinner over the weekend while we watched the NFL playoffs, but it ended up being so good, that I changed my scheduled post to this soup one. Truth be told, I just really wanted to share my snow photos with you all and this was an excuse. These are in no way impressive in the amounts of snow fall, but I thought they were pretty cool. Though Denver has not seen the bitter cold and the accumulation of the Midwest and Northeast, it's still been quite cold, and when the snow starts falling, I like to eat slurpy noodles. I don't know why I like noodles in cold weather, but I do, I think I mentioned that before when I made my Chicken Laksa, also on a very cold ... continue reading...

Pomegranate Chicken Kebabs

Pomegranate Chicken Kebabs

The weekend before Christmas, Trace and I got together with some long time friends for a couples night out. It's so nice to go somewhere with adults! It was a perfect evening for a date night; the snow was falling, it was cool and crisp but not horrendously cold, and just very festive all around. We chose to meet at a British pub in downtown Denver called The British Bulldog. I like this place for a number of reasons: It's called the British Bulldog It's a pub (even though I don't drink, that evening they had a great mulled cider) It has great food They show British football games (complete with the yobs that come with that whole scene) What's great about their menu is that along with the traditional British pub fare, they have quite a good selection of Pakistani/Indian food. I am sure you know that Indian food is very popular in the UK and so finding this menu at the pub was no big surprise to me. We've come enough times for me to have tried almost everything on the Indian menu, except for the lamb and that's not going to happen anytime soon. They also have proper chips. I ordered a chicken masala dish which was excellent and I love how they don't skimp on the heat. ... continue reading...
