Asparagus season has been present for a few months now and I've seen the stacks of beautiful, green stalks in the shops and have even succumbed to their power. Of course, they are not local to Colorado because our growing season has barely begun, but they're from the warmer climes of California and Mexico. I am sometimes envious of the States that have farmers markets year around which provide a fairly decent bounty even in the midst of winter. Then I step outside and see The Rockies and I'm no longer envious :) I'll eat the occasional fruit or vegetable from California if it means I can look upon the mountains on my daily travels. So, you can imagine my excitement when I received Isabelle Farm's weekly email about what is available at the farm stand that weekend and found asparagus on the list! "Down the road from me" grown asparagus, you cannot get fresher or more local than that. I was eager to get there and get some before they ran out so I got up early on Saturday and raced down. I grabbed a few bunches of the beautiful stalks and a couple of bags of their over wintered spinach. Let me tell you how sweet this spinach is, it is pretty amazing, and it will be in a ... continue reading...
Apple and Rhubarb Galette
This week went by in a haze almost as thick as the one that hovered over Civic Centre this past Sunday during the 420 festival. I'd like to say with certainty that the thick clouds around the Capitol building are bulging rain clouds but one can't entirely be sure :) Not that I actively participated in the annual Colorado tradition centred around our most laid back of recreational activities; smoking weed :) The air was thick, heavy and sweetly scented. There were throngs of people and just as many police. We happen to stumble upon the festivities as we drove through downtown Denver. I knew it was going on sometime (4/20) but the date just escaped our minds until we were stuck in traffic wondering why there was so much traffic on Easter Sunday. Then looking around and seeing the obvious state of oblivion of so many, we understood. I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter and for those observing Passover, I hope that you all had a grand feast too. Last week was a short week for the kids and my hubby was off for three days too, so it ended up being a very nice weekend for us as well. I was in Fort Collins doing a cooking demo for Specialty Appliance on Saturday and afterwards we ... continue reading...

This past weekend turned from a bleak, cold and snowy one to the best one in 2014! On Saturday, I received the most anticipated and happy news; the newest addition to our family. My eldest nephew and his wife, welcomed their first baby boy! The little guy is the first grandson for my sister and our first great nephew. I am so happy that I am tempted to bake treats and mail them out to all of you! But, I'm also under the weather with a horrible cold, so...that's not going to happen :) This may not be a big deal to some but I was 13 when I first became an aunt, I have known my nephew longer than a lot of other people. I was my nephew's baby sitter, care taker, and as we grew up together, sister, friend and confidante. This little baby is not a great nephew but a nephew and grand son rolled into one. Actually, in Indian culture, he really is considered my grand son too, since nephews and nieces are supposed to be like your own children. Now, whether I'm ready for grandma designation; I'm not sure about that! I was planning on having a mid life crisis around June when my birthday hits, but looks like I'm going to have to shelf that already because we're way past that! I'll just ... continue reading...
Pan Cubano | Cuban Bread
I suppose, I should start off by saying that this is not a sponsored post, or a review post or even a recommendation post; it's just going to sound like a lot of the three! It happens to be a post of happy coincidence, or a blissful accident or the perfect opportunity. The last few months I've put the brakes on the blog a bit to catch up with my normal life. Posting once a week has been great and it allows me to catch up with reading other blogs, trying recipes out and basically doing other things. I didn't realise how much time the blog was taking from my regular life. This extra time has allowed me to concentrate on some of my own projects, my children's projects and my husband's doings. Going off on a tangent here for a bit, I wanted to share this project that Laith had to make for his geometry module. It's a model showing general geometry and math terms. The sci-fi nerds that we are, we made the Star Destroyer from Star Wars. Turned out really well, and I'm not afraid to say that I did a lot of the work. I am the biggest nerd around and it doesn't help that I am also married to one. So, anyway, back to the regularly scheduled post; my husband for the last 9 months or so, ... continue reading...
Apple and Rhubarb Crumble
This last week, we finally had a glimpse of spring like weather. It's been warm enough to where I even spotted shorts and tank tops! But this is spring in Colorado, one day it's sweltering and the next we're in a winter weather advisory. The Rockies have been in their element, standing majestically tall and snow capped against the stunning blue skies. I will say this time and time again, I am so lucky to live here and to enjoy this view every time I run my menial errands. I'm not a hot weather person like I've mentioned before, but I do like spring though. I glimpsed my first daffodils yesterday as we strolled Pearl Street Mall in Boulder. Daffodils are my favourite, and instantly uplift me. One of my all time favourite poems is about daffodils and I can't help but think of it every year when I see them. I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand ... continue reading...
