White Whole Wheat Rolls

It snowed the other day, so I baked. There's just something about snow falling that makes you want to turn on the oven and get knee high in flour. I do prefer the more relaxed snow flakes that fall at leisure and float merrily down to kiss the earth. When snow flakes fall calmly, everything is calm, quiet, serenely white. The sky is white, the ground is bright and you giggle as the snow flakes tickle your nose as they fall. I don't like snow flakes with a purpose, the ones that mean business and create havoc with their intense and relentless shower. When these hardcore, polystyrene balls of fury are out, pounding everything beneath them, the sky is gray, the ground is dull and it feels cold and dreary. We were pounded the other day. There wasn't a lot of accumulation, but it came down hard and angry. So, I baked and filled the house with friendly aromas of fresh, buttery yeast rolls. I like to use the white whole wheat flour for my rolls, breads and the whole wheat Indian rotis. I think it has a milder taste and is ground a bit finer than the regular whole wheat and aesthetically, it bakes up a nice golden brown colour. I love mushrooms, all kinds; wild, domestic, exotic. When I am at Costco, I cannot pass by the huge pack of portobellos without putting one in my trolley and I cannot walk by the mushroom stand at the farmers market without buying a very expensive bag of exotics. Most of the time I have a vague idea of what I am going to with them, unfortunately, they always just end up in the same old thing. As much as I love mushrooms, they always stump me (kinda like artichokes). The exotic mushrooms I don't mess with them too much. I usually prepare them very simply and we have them as a side or as bruschetta on some rustic bread. The poor portobellos always end up in either soup or beef stew.  This was going to be the fate of the pack of portobellos in my fridge the other day. They were destined for a pot of stew when their path was miraculously changed (only because the beef was used to make another dish and I didn't have any more) To introduce a vegetarian dish into the weeks menu, I decided upon a mushroom strudel. Hello there! I am guest posting over at Minnie's blog, The Lady 8 Home, today. She asked me a couple of months ago if I could do one for her and I happily obliged. Minnie is simply delightful and we have become good friends in the short time I have known her. We live miles apart but because of our blogs and Facebook, we are not that far at all. Minnie too, is from India so we have lots of stuff in common. She has a great blog that covers not only food but doggy care, house tips and health and beauty too. Growing up in England, we ate mainly my mum's cooking and it was, 80% of the time, Indian food. My mum tried new cuisines and new recipes, but we always pretty much had the same food in rotation. Outside of my home, I learnt to love British food (yes, there is such a thing), Italian and Arabic. My comfort food, or soul food always stems from one of these cuisines; biryani from India, treacle pudding from England, a bowl of pasta with tomato sauce or some kebabs.  My father spent a lot of time in Italy and as a result, he loves Italian food and we ate a lot of it growing up. He had my mum recreating all kinds of pastas and meat dishes he had tried in Italy. He truly thinks of Italy as his second home and so, I believe there is some Italian in me ;) I digress. What I wanted to say was that, as well travelled as my father was, he was and is, a very picky eater. He likes good food, well made, well flavoured and traditional; be it Italian, Indian or any other cuisine. At home, I mentioned we ate the same foods quite often, and I believe it was because of his selective taste. Happy Valentine's Day everyone! Hope you are all having a great day and have been showered with flowers, gifts, chocolates and most importantly, love and affection! I am excited for today, not because of Valentine's but because I have a birthday party to go to today for a very special, little boy who is turning one. Happy Birthday, Ismail! February 14th in my house is like any other day. My husband and I avoid dining out on this night and prefer to hang out at home with our children and enjoy a home cooked meal. Today, we will enjoy birthday cake and party hats! In fact, the one and only time we went out to dinner, was at some fancy schmancy French restaurant, many years ago. However, the food was way sub par, especially considering what they expected us to pay for it. I remember clearly, it was a prix fixe at $70 a head. For the starter I chose a vegetable tart, and it came out very pretty looking but was burnt at the bottom. How do you burn a tart?? After that experience we started staying in. Like I said, February 14th is like any other day at our house. What I mean is that at home, everyday is Valentine's Day. Not in the sense of chocolates and gifts and such, but life.
