A Valentine's menu of dessert would not be complete without a chocolate dessert. After all, Valentine's Day and chocolate are synonymous with each other. We see heart shaped boxes upon heart shaped boxes at the shops, all glistening in their crinkly, shiny wrapping papers and velvety bows. People scurry about carrying their loved ones favourite kind (mine is European chocolate). My husband gets me chocolate every Valentine's Day, it's the one thing I let him buy me. He also knows that he will be spending the night on the couch if he ever gets me those horrid ones from those big retailers. Many will go out for a romantic dinner and there is a very fair chance that the dessert menu will have these luxuriously decadent cakes. Molten chocolate lava cakes, warm, gooey, oozy chocolate flowing lusciously from a chocolate cake shell. This is the first dessert I look for on a restaurant dessert menu and usually find it because they are so popular these days. Just the name of these delightful gems evokes warm and fuzzy images, comforting and homey. However, these babies are more than just comfort food, they are sophisticated, sensual and downright sexy. They are great to share because ... continue reading...
Strawberry Pineapple Fool
Four days to go till Valentine's day, do you all have your plans set? I don't know what I was thinking but I went to the mall today and it was teeming with throngs of humanity. I couldn't figure out why until I saw the masses carrying heart boxes filled with chocolates, the endless queues in the jewellery stores and smelly lotion places and of course, hearts galore. I wasn't swayed by any of these wares, the only thing that stopped me in my tracks was the face of David Beckham staring at me from the H&M window advertising his undies. So, here's another little story about my failed crushes of yore, for your amusement. I once gave this guy a gorgeous smelling cologne and professed my affection in my usual, subtle as a sledgehammer, way. It was all fine and dandy and he smelled wonderful and I was hopelessly besotted. Unfortunately for me, he smelled TOO good and the rest of the female coworkers thought so too. He was continuously surrounded by woman, young and old, all breathing in his fabulous, manly scent. So, to make a long story short, I had now made him incredibly desirable to everybody and he ended up with my arch enemy. I wish I knew how to make this aptly named pudding ... continue reading...
Strawberry Madeleines
Valentine's Day is almost upon us, finally. Though it has been thrust upon us since December 26. I don't like Valentine's Day. Like everything else, it has become a silly commercial holiday for the flower and chocolate industry, along with the jewellery industry desperately trying to get a piece of the action. Yes, I know thats a very negative view of a holiday that's all about love and romance and all things sweet, chocolatey and red. Surprisingly, my husband thinks Valentine's Day is important to me, I think all men do for fear of repercussions at home. However, Valentine's Day in my teenage years was very important. Although, I am not quite sure why since I had three very major things working against me 1.strict Muslim parents 2.strict Catholic primary schooling 3.an all-girls secondary school **sigh** I was rebellion in a can just waiting to be unleashed. There was a snowball's chance in hell for me to receive any kind of secret admirer adulations on the most important of teenage holidays, Valentine's Day. But there was comfort in knowing I wasn't alone and that my friends were in similar predicaments (they too had strict, no nonsense parents). I was very adventurous though ... continue reading...
Éclairs with White Chocolate Cream, 2nd Anniversary and a Giveaway!
Today, my blog turns two years old! For me, that's quite an achievement seeing as that I am really bad at maintaining it! I love writing and cooking for it, but unless I devote a considerable time to it, it's hard work to maintain and generate the traffic you want. I am thankful though, to everyone who has and continues to visit and read my ramblings and try my concoctions. I want to thank, my blogger friends who tirelessly read my stories and memories, and support me unconditionally. They leave wonderful comments and feedback and I appreciate each and everyone of them. Two and a half years ago, I toyed with the idea of starting a blog but kept talking myself out of it. I knew it needed a serious commitment that I knew I couldn't keep. However, days of cooking and cleaning and being a wife and mommy were just making me numb. I longed for intellectual conversation, something to tickle my numbed and sleepy nerves; a spark to jolt me into being me the old me. Here are a few random facts that make me, me: I am a Sci Fi/Mystery nerd: Star Wars, Star Trek, all superhero movies, Sherlock, Inspector Lewis.. I am a science geek: audio/video, tech etc I am a hopeless romantic but happen to ... continue reading...
Double Ka Meetha ~ Indian Bread Pudding
Last post I mentioned my little dinner party with some great friends. Here is the dessert I made that evening. I have mentioned before that I am not a huge fan of Indian desserts. I like a handful and this bread pudding happens to be one of them. India is known for their milk and nut sweets. Milk that is cooked down thick and then mixed with ground nuts and sugar. There is a huge variety of these sweets called mithai. I don't really like them; maybe an almond or pistachio burfi, ladoos (sweetened gram flour balls), jalebis ( flour pastry, fried and doused in syrup, a bit like a funnel cake) and gulab jamuns (milk and flour balls, deep fried and soaked in syrup) but that's about all. I am not even a big fan of kheer, Indian rice pudding. You are probably thinking, "Well, she likes quite a bit!" but if you knew how vast the selection is, you'd realise that I like less than 1%! So, what do I like as far as Indian desserts go? I do like potato kheer or kaddu (opo squash) kheer and I love halwa made from opo squash, I have a recipe here. I also really like dal halwa (lentil), especially when it is stuffed inside pastry. I will have to make an effort and reproduce these for you all to ... continue reading...
