Well, whaddaya know? I managed a post sooner than 10 days! I'm trying. I just need some organisation and an urge to actually cook and motivation to take photos rather than just gobble the food down. It really is hard sometimes to cook and spontaneously take photos. I never really cook for just the blog, I cook for the family and we always eat it after all the photos have been taken. However, there's just no time sometimes and it seems like I will have to schedule blog cooking! Do any of you cook for your blogs specifically? I know sometimes I really want to try a new recipe so those days are always planned and probably the most organised! I have changed my photography area around a bit and moved almost everything into the kitchen and dining room. It has made it easier to shoot as I cook. My photography has always been quite minimalistic; I don't use too many props or over style so this has made it even easier. At the graduation party, we pushed our huge 10 seat table back against the wall to do buffet style food and to make more room in our dining room. We've left it like that; I like the extra room and it still seats 6 of us for dinner. The extra room allows for my ... continue reading...
Pepper Jack Mac and Cheese
I may have disappeared again. In my defence, I tried really hard to not only get this post out earlier but to visit as many of you as I could. I didn't get to post this last week and I missed many of you. It was just a very hectic week. My daughter graduated on Saturday and it was a lovely ceremony and a bit bittersweet and emotional. This was my first graduation as far as my children go. My eldest didn't walk and so robbed me of my proud mommy moment. In England, we don't have all this graduation business. We sit our exams, we enjoy our summer as much as we can, and in August nervously await with baited breath for the postal flap in our door to fly open and letters to drop on the floor, hoping one of the envelopes is from the Examination Board. Then we squeal with excitement or moan with regret, either way, that's it, that's our graduation pomp and circumstance. I may not have all the hullabaloo at my "graduation", however, it was still very nice to be a part of daughter's big day. I tried to hold back the tears when we walked down to greet her after the ceremony. A few photos and then our moment was done. She waved to us as she disappeared into the sea of blue clad ... continue reading...
Strawberry Rhubarb Jam
Is it just me or is time really flying by? I am quite certain it was Christmas time just a few weeks ago, but here I am with my calendar telling me it's almost June. What?! Where did the weeks go? Understandably, most of my weeks went by in a blur because I was sick for almost 8 of them. But still, it's almost June! This time warp has also really affected my cooking, blogging and writing (and posting) Before I can press "publish" on the last post, it's already time to schedule another one! As you can see, I'm woefully behind. Behind with creating, behind with posting and behind with visiting cherished friends. I have no idea where my week goes. It's this haze of kids, school, shopping, cooking, and a few work things thrown in. Before I know it, it's Friday and I am scrambling to create a menu for work the following day and to go shop for it all. It's a good thing I don't work outside of the home everyday! As a result, the blog has been sorely neglected. I do feel guilty because I realise it's this blog that has given me the opportunities I have right now. It's still the thing that starts the conversation at work with the new people I meet. One of my most ... continue reading...
Millennium Falcon Cake | Star Wars Day
Happy Star Wars Day, lovely people! May the 4th be with you!! I figured since I am quite the nerd, that today would be a good day for my comeback post. I am sorry for disappearing off the face of the Earth. My absence was totally unintentional but unavoidable, I'm afraid. On the tail end of my vacation to Texas, I ended up catching the worst cold imaginable. The trip home was horrendous; filled with watery eyes, snotty nose, blocked ears and extremes dizziness. This continued for two weeks straight. Since I take some strong meds for my RA, any cold or ailment is exaggerated and it takes me weeks to get over. So, three weeks into fighting this cold, I was pretty exhausted, miserable and frustrated. Add a week or two of wallowing in self pity and here I am. Somewhat back to normal, but still drained and uninspired. Of course, I couldn't let Star Wars Day go by and I not do something! It's like my holiday! The wonderful thing about being a nerd is when you have a husband who is a bigger nerd, and children who also appreciate the nerdier things in life, doing things like this is totally worth it. All in all, this Millennium Falcon cake was a hit. My ... continue reading...
Lemon Spelt Loaf
I've mentioned few times how much I love winter. It's not just the colder temperatures, but the snow (yes, I know), the cloud formations during winter, the ominous Rockies, the white stormy and overcast skies. I love it all, even the bare trees. Yes, it's dull and dreary but the promise of newly sprung life and the first few glimpses of green make all the dreariness worth it. Aren't we all super excited when the first bits of sunshiny days appear? We drool at the sight of the first of the spring's bouncy, golden daffodils and the heady hyacinths, soaking in their beauty and fragrance, awaiting the promise of warmer days. So, I'm not totally crazy. Another reason for my love of winter: citrus. I love citrus. That's not to say I don't like summer fruit, I love my berries and stone fruit but I also love oranges, lemons, tangerines and I love discovering new kinds of citrus and new varieties. This year I was able to find an heirloom variety of navel oranges. Of course, I promptly bought some and I have to tell you, oh my goodness, they are SO sweet and so juicy. Have you tried the sumo tangerines? They are ugly little things on the outside but oh so delicious inside. I was ... continue reading...
