Blood Orange Focaccia

Blood Orange Focaccia

My last post inspired so many lovely comments! Thank you all for being so sweet and it's great to see that I'm not the only one who struggles to read on a regular basis. You'll be proud to know that I finished a whole book the other night and started a new one last night! Woo hoo! I'm on a roll.  As nice and calm as the last post was, I'm going to raise a stink in this one. Actually, it's more of a "discuss with me and others"/spirited rant. And I know we've discussed the etiquette of party attending and hosting before but I have new things to add. Funny how these posts come up shortly after I've held a party... First off I'd like to ask you all, since many of you drink, would you go to a party whose hosts don't drink? Is it a deal breaker for you or you think you are going to have a terrible time at the party? It's a question that nags me a bit when I entertain friends who drink but we don't. They seem to have a good time but it makes me wonder. Over the weekend I had a few work friends come over for brunch. They all know my husband and I don't drink and it doesn't seem to bother them. In fact, between the pork and alcohol, there's plenty of fodder for endless jokes ... continue reading...

February 4th marks the four year anniversary for this blog! Where has the time gone? As the date approaches, I find myself thinking back on the time I decided to start this little piece of my web, and why I started this. I stumbled on a few blogs early on and loved how they were written or I loved their photos but more than the recipe, photos or the writing, it was the stories these bloggers wrote about their everyday life and adventures. To me it was not just reading, it was conversation, an interaction with another being.  Anyone who knows my husband knows that he is not a talker (unless its about comic books and SciFi, then you can't shut him up), I on the other hand don't know what silence means. I will ask you a million questions and I will remember every thing you tell me because I am genuinely interested in you!  I find it amusing that in the last 6-8 months I have been doing my cooking demonstrations at my husband's store, I've gotten to know the guys and gals who work there so much better than he knows them! And it's purely because I talk...a lot.  Anyway, I digress, as always. I started the blog to write, mainly for myself. After years of children, ... continue reading...

Living in Denver, or rather Colorado as a whole, there are mainly two topics of contention and discussion around this season. It doesn't matter where you may be or what you may be doing, chances are one of these two topics will somehow make their way into the conversation before its end. The discussion of one is the passionate sort; it brings excitement, misery and loyalty like nothing can. The other is filled with much the same except add frustration, often disdain, and in my case, awe. Last Sunday pretty much brought one of those topics to a disappointing halt. The Denver Broncos' season came to a surprising (not really) and very disappointing end. We were hoping to make it the Championship game with another chance at the Super Bowl. My husband and I both knew it was a long shot. They haven't played well in a few weeks but the loyal fans we are, there is always that glimmer of hope and faith in your team. It was a disappointing Sunday and quite the bleak Monday. I am usually not the kind of person who mopes around in a bad mood that my team lost but even I felt really quite blah Monday morning. Oh well...we'll get over the disappointment. We always do. I made cake ... continue reading...

Yuzu Meringue Tart

Happy New Year, my friends!! Wishing all my readers, my friends and family all the best for 2015, may it be the best one yet for you all. I'm not sure if anyone is really even reading this, this morning! I'm sure you all had quite a busy night celebrating into the wee hours. Not us, though and by us, I mean us, the two old fogeys. Even Laith had plans with his friend and he's just 9! We went out for some Thai food with one of the daughters but even she abandoned us after scoring a free dinner from her parents. So, the two of us chilled, the telly quietly humming in the background, broadcasting the New Year's Eve celebrations in other cities and as I sat typing up my post and editing photos, Trace spent time conquering the world on the computer. This is the extent of our NYE festivities these days, far from the crazy parties of our younger years.  I know that it's really just another day and all, but it still makes you reflect on the past year and the year ahead. Time is just flying by and I see my children growing up. I think that's the hardest, every year they get older, smarter, and more independent. I can't come to terms with the fact that my youngest, Laith, will be ... continue reading...

Roasted Banana Cake

Roasted Banana Cake

We may not have awakened to a winter wonderland on Christmas morning but as the day progressed, the heavens opened up and unleashed copious amounts of sparkly glitter, and very soon we were blanketed in the festive, white stuff. It's funny how that on most days, snow is an inconvenience, a mess to drive in and the constant shovelling of driveways and footpaths isn't the kind of exercise we enjoy on a wintry morning. However, I love it and during the holiday season, so does everyone else. True, driving can be treacherous, it's freezing and the car never warms up, but I love winter, and I enjoy everything that comes with this season. I would have preferred a more leisurely start to Christmas morning but since we do not partake in the traditional festivities of Christmas, our early start is usually, what has become our tradition now, a harried trip to the theatre to catch the first showing of a film. This year it was "A Night at The Museum 3" I really enjoyed this one because it is set in my hometown of London (and could possibly also, have a lot to do with the fact that Dan Stevens is playing Sir Launcelot). As we left the movie theatre, the blue skies that had accompanied ... continue reading...
