Raspberry Poached Pear Pavlova

Raspberry Poached Pear Pavlova

For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to visit Australia. Maybe it was from watching the famous Australian soap opera Neighbours as a teen and sympathising with all the teenage angst, or maybe it was the idea of a far away land. I was intrigued by the island, the natives and the vastness of the country and add to that The Sydney Opera House, The Great Barrier Reef and all the amazing coastal cities Australia has to offer, it is still very much on the top of my list. I am quite positive that these are the real reasons why I wanted to always visit Australia and not because I had a huge crush on an Australian stud. That crush went no where (though it's a highly entertaining story if anybody wants to hear it) but thoughts of Australia have always lingered. After I started this blog, I added even more reasons to want to visit Austraila; my amazing blogger friends. Most of the time, reading their blogs I am turned upside down and inside out; when it's day here, it's night there, we have summer when they are having winter. I have yet to get used to it! The friends I have made are an exceptional set of women. There is Jasmine from the blog, Absolutely Jas. I strongly ... continue reading...

Harees | Savoury Wheat Porridge

Harees | Savoury Wheat Porridge

The creaking floorboards, the flurry of activity, the muffled voices in the hallway all had me at the edge of my seat, waiting for that much anticipated knock on the door. When would they come? What would they send down? Would it be sweet? Would it be savoury? As a child, the waiting period between our upstairs neighbours settling in to their vacation flat and sending us exotic, edible delights, seemed like an eternity. Why is something other than your mother's cooking so appealing to children? And yet when we grow up, all we want is to have our food taste "just like Mom used to make." My mother was an excellent cook but still, I waited impatiently for the neighbours upstairs to send down their delicacies. And maybe that's it, it was different food and as a youngster, and unlike many other youngsters, I loved everything and I loved variety. It's only now in my old age that I find I am more picky; smell and taste challenged. The first rap on the door had me jumping up from my usual perch on the sofa watching TV (after all my homework was done, of course. I happened to be a big swot) With great anticipation I would open the door, waiting to see what was displayed on the large ... continue reading...

Harissa | A Most Versatile Hot Sauce

Harissa | A Most Versatile Hot Sauce

Happy autumn everybody! Hope everyone had a fabulous weekend and brought in fall with some warm and cosy baking. Our introduction to my favourite season was a bit wet and cold, as far from warm and cosy as you can get! We took a drive up to Breckenridge, one of the most lovely mountain resorts and a favourite with skiers during the ski season. The fall foliage was out in its glory, resplendent in amber, golds and reds. What's beautiful about autumn in the Rockies, is that the landscape is such a blend of colours. The pines and firs stay their deep evergreen colour but the aspens, maples and oaks are all changing colours around them, dotted in between, forming gold and yellow patches and the occasional fiery red clump of the maples. It was a nice trip, Breckenridge is about 90 minutes west of Denver, and so the drive was a pleasant one enjoying the colours of the season. As we approached Breckenridge however, we could see ominous clouds looming over the mountains and though it cleared up for us for the time we were there, they soon returned with a vengeance, the skies opened up, the temperature dropped, and we decided it was time to go. I heard that Breckenridge got a ... continue reading...

Plum Cardamom Crostata

Plum Cardamom Crostata

Everywhere on the blogosphere, the gold and amber hues of autumn are beginning to appear on the plates. I am trying my hardest to not jump onto that band wagon quite yet only because summer is still quite present, the days are still hot and there is still some stellar summer produce at the farmers markets. It's hard to think of autumn recipes when summer produce is so abundant. I was at my local farm (at the Isabelle Farm stand in Lafayette) the other day and they were over flowing with gorgeous summer corn, leafy greens, heirloom tomatoes and a myriad of vibrantly coloured peppers. The first of the fall pears and apples are beginning to appear and I am so waiting to get cracking with my autumn recipes. So many ideas! In the meantime; another summer recipe showcasing some super sweet plums I found. This summer, I did not make any sort of berry or rhubarb pie like I usually do, except for the Apple Rhubarb Hand Pies, I made for Father's Day, so I compromised with tart/pie and made this Plum Cardamom Crostata (or Galette). Many, many years ago, before the blog, and at a time I was getting into enjoying baking and cooking, I was planning a Thanksgiving menu. Back then, I was ... continue reading...

Strawberry and Melon Salad with Harissa Vinaigrette

Strawberry and Melon Salad with Harissa Vinaigrette

So, I'm scrambling like crazy to post some summer recipes before autumn officially rolls in. The Autumnal Equinox this year is September 22. I have a few days, I'll cram in what I can!  The day time weather has gone back to feeling like summer again after the rain finally went away this week. The nights however, have definitely taken on a fall feeling. I love this time of the year; changing colours, warm days and cool nights, even the air smells different.  I was thinking why I fell behind posting seasonal summer recipes this year and then it occurred to me that Ramadan was bang in the middle of summer this year. I was busy posting holiday recipes.  Before I embrace autumn and all its seasonal glory, here's a bit of a fluff recipe. I always feel a bit of a fraud posting salad recipes because, let's face it, who doesn't know how to make a salad? (Actually, you'd be surprised the number of bad salads I've had, there are people who don't know how to make a salad.) Truthfully, the only reason I'm posting this recipe is because it was so gosh darned gorgeous! And pretty delicious too! I saw a photo of a similar salad on Food 52, and purely because of its gorgeousness did I decide ... continue reading...
