Broomfield Days

Broomfield Days

I cannot believe it's Monday, already! Where did the weekend go? My husband and I pride ourselves on not having a social life and so when we spend the entire weekend busy, it really throws us for a loop. I know it must sound really pathetic but we enjoy doing absolutely nothing or just doing things together! Our children, however, are completely different and if they aren't attached to the hips of their friends the entire weekend it's not a weekend. This weekend was Broomfield's annual community festival called Broomfield Days. Lucky for us, all the activities take place at the park just a short walk from our house. Last year, I didn't walk down and look around because we had just moved and I was busy still settling in. This year I decided to take Laith down to walk with his school in the parade. Noor was running a 3 mile run for her high school and she left early in the morning. Sahare accompanied her friend to the festival. I was pleasantly surprised. It was a great community event and it was fun to bump into people you knew. There were rides and activities for the kids, for a fee of course, and food stalls and businesses with booths selling their wares. Laith and I ... continue reading...

Beef Stew

Beef Stew

It seems like lately, the weather has taken the "no summer after Labour Day" rule quite seriously! It's been pleasantly cool these last few weeks and feels like fall is making an appearance. I am so ready for cooler weather. Already my body has been yearning for soups and stews and warming comfort food of the cooler months. I seem to have begun my love-hate relationship with salad already. Today was a cold, rainy day here in Denver. My body absolutely rebels against cold and wet days. Every bone and joint in my body tries to run off in different directions, trying to hide from the cold and leaves me achy and sore all over. I've been lying around all day with my heating pad on various parts of my body watching "Real Housewives of New Jersey" marathon on Bravo. Pretty sad. I got up briefly to throw together a soup and to go and pick up Laith from school. Then it was right back to bed and some more real, bad television. I have been cooking but it hasn't been any kind of awe inspiring cooking lately. I don't know if it's just me but I seem to have no time for anything. From the minute the children go to school and to the time I have to pick up Laith, it seems the time just ... continue reading...

Post Ramadan Catch Up

Post Ramadan Catch Up

Hello blogger buddies! Sorry for my absence the last few weeks. I have no good excuse except for the fact that I had absolutely no inspiration to cook or write. The weeks after Ramadan is over, are a bit hard on me physically; I feel like a limp mop with not much energy. Slowly, our routines are back in place and we are hitting our beds at a decent time. Don't get me wrong, Ramadan is great; there is no other month like it. Its energy, its vibe, it changes everything. Eid ul Fitr, the end of Ramadan, was great fun. The children took a day off school and we went to prayer in the morning.  After a breakfast of Einstein Bagels, we headed off to the bowling alley. We enjoyed a few games and I realised how bad I was at bowling. I hadn't bowled in years and it showed big time! We had fun though and that was the whole point. We then stopped by a diner to pick up some onion rings and French fries for our drive to Cache La Poudre Canyon. Since we could eat during the day now, we felt the necessity to stuff our faces all day. The onion rings hit the spot; crispy, oniony and greasy...yum. The canyon was up North by Fort Collins; about 40 minutes drive for us. It was ... continue reading...

Vanilla Cupcakes with Vanilla Buttercream

Vanilla Cupcakes with Vanilla Buttercream

It is most unfortunate that I have really done my arm/shoulder in. Sometimes this whole RA thing is most inconvenient. I really have to think hard before I attempt to do even the most simplest things. What really irritates me though, is that I take very strong medications that literally cost thousands of dollars and I still have to put up with crap like this. Not fun. The only thing I can do with my limited range of movement is type and so, here I am. I am waiting patiently to hear if Ramadan ends tonight or not (depends on new moon sighting) and whether we celebrate Eid ul Fitr tomorrow. I really hope it's tomorrow and not because I don't want to fast another day, but because my hubby has taken tomorrow off. He has his company big wigs visiting and if Eid is on Wednesday, he may not be able to swap his days. If he can't take a day off, I'll be stuck at home doing chores and the children will be at school on Eid. I can hear the whining already. In celebration of Eid, my son Laith is taking cupcakes to school to share with his little friends. His teacher is hoping he will speak a little about what Eid is but I suspect all he will remember is that Eid=presents. He has been ... continue reading...

Breads and Pastry Puddings/Dessert Tarts/Pies

Strawberry Rhubarb Pie

Strawberry Rhubarb Pie

At the beginning of summer I promised my children that I would make all manner of summer fruit pies for them. It wasn't until Wednesday that one actually materialised. In my defence, it's been a busy summer for me with guests and a heck of a lot of regular cooking. The fruit pies and the promise kind of slipped my mind. Now that summer is almost coming to an end, I felt I had to honour my promise. There is a place on the way to the Rocky Mountain National Park that advertises fresh, baked pies and other novelties to lure the millions of visitors that flock to the Park. Their advertising works. They hooked us a few times and we tried their pies. The first time we went, the pies were excellent. We had ordered a slice of cherry and a slice of blackberry. Unfortunately, our subsequent visits have proved a bit disappointing. Pies are not as good and the slices are smaller. This is how the promise came to be. After the last mediocre, expensive slice, I told the children I could make a whole pie for the price of that one slice. They held on to my words (actually, my husband is the bigger culprit, he doesn't forget!) I was feeling generous Wednesday and decided that it was time to ... continue reading...
