Between what's been going on at home and all the upheaval in Europe, it has made for an exhausting week. I am tired; my body, my mind, my soul, my heart, everything is exhausted and everything hurts. It sounds selfish of me as I complain about my first world problems at home while others are facing real problems across the seas. What's happening to the people of Syria is tragic, having to risk life and your loved ones to flee from your home, your country, maybe the only life you've known to a strange place, a new place that could be a safe haven for a new life but at the mercy of others. The image of that little boy washed up on the Turkish beach was heart breaking. I cannot imagine the pain of the father who had to bury his sons and his wife. And it doesn't stop with him, there are so many of them. It's been quite numbing to read all the comments from people on this crisis. There are some beautiful people out there with kind souls who want to help and want their governments to help. There are also a lot of ugly people out there. I have read my fair share of mean and nasty comments from these individuals. The fact is, unless you've been in their shoes, or know of ... continue reading...
Peach Tart
I'm kind of enjoying these unexpected breaks I keep taking. I don't mean to disappear but it's been really hectic at home with back to school/college, work and keeping up with house and blog. I think actually, I would prefer to just cook and blog rather than work and clean house! Cooking and then writing about it is a lot more stress free and therapeutic. I would gladly just do this, but alas, I think the guys at work would physically drive over and drag me from the house if I quit. They enjoy the food and cookies a little bit too much and any thoughts of me taking a day off is shot down in a hurry. Back during Ramadan, I told them I was going to take the Saturday off for Eid festivities. They looked at me in horror. Then one of them actually asked me if I was being serious and asked what he was going to eat if I wasn't going to be there. Then he asked if I could cook something at home and he'd come and pick it up! I said "NO!", quite vehemently! I guess it's totally my fault; I have spoilt them rotten and now I'm paying for it. But on the flip side, they are pretty awesome guys and really take care of me too. They keep me laughing with their silly jokes and stories, and ... continue reading...
Squash Blossom Tart
Having taken an unexpected 15 days off from blogging, you would think I'd have an excuse or even a good reason to have neglected my little space...I don't. I'm not sure what happened, I got to have some time free from work and was excited to get a move on with some summer recipes and piling up a back stock of posts for when I'm not so free, then...poof...laziness set in. Well, not entirely true. I'd like to say I spent the days away lazily in bed with a good book and a steaming cuppa or parked in front of my tv eating bonbons but that didn't happen either. The children volunteered to help at camp and my son participated, so everyday I was dropping them off and picking them up. Then mundane tasks at home that needed to be done and then such things as actually cooking dinner also had to take place. Sometimes, I just want to eat my food, I don't want to share on Facebook, write a post, flip out my camera or Instagram anything. I went on social media fast of sorts. It's incredibly freeing! My free week ended and then I was slammed with work, and that explains the last few days. I've been trying to get this post out for the last 4 days! I have been cooking though. ... continue reading...
Stone Fruit Pavlova
These last two weeks have been unexpectedly carefree and relaxing. I took a day off from work for Eid ul Fitr and two of my classes got cancelled because people didn't sign up soon enough. Of course, on the day of the class itself, we had about 3 or 4 phone calls from clients wanting to come to the cooking class that evening. Uhhh...I need time to shop, prep and plan! There's a reason for a RSVP. Oh well, the no classes meant I had some free time I wasn't expecting. My days off from menu planning and shopping aren't any different from my regular days. I still plan menus and shop, but for the blog. Cooking for the blog is a lot more stress free and open to pretty much anything. Right now, I'm insane over all the fresh produce. My mind goes into over drive when I'm at the farm stand or at the produce section of the grocery store. I search out Colorado grown produce as much as I can and we are very lucky to have many farms just within driving distance from us who supply their goods to Whole Foods and other grocery stores. I often think that I may look a tad strange as I stand there amongst the produce aisles with my little pink notebook and pen and a faraway look in my ... continue reading...
Jujeh Kebabs and Baghali Polo
Growing up in a household of 6 children was noisy to say the least. My youngest 2 brothers were definitely boys, loud, active and generally just a pain in the neck. My mother was kept busy by their antics, and boyish tendencies of inquisitiveness, rowdiness and poop humorousness. A flat in Central London was probably not the best place for active boys but we managed. It was a very large flat with huge ceilings and long hallways. These hallways were a favourite of theirs and they would sprint up and down them. There was no such thing as a leisurely stroll or long distance marathon, it was always the 100 metres dash. The flat may have been large and palatial but the floors were still paper thin under the thundering charge of boys, racing their cars or their Star Wars X Wing fighters or whatever new toy was the flavour of the month. The lady who lived in the flat below was none too pleased with the boys. But before you feel sorry for little old granny having to live with the constant noise of young boys hurtling down the hallways, let me tell you, she was no granny. That woman was rail thin, had a colourful mouth on her and might have been a tad racist. She had no problem ... continue reading...
